Glen Sanders
360 photography holds an element of surprise for the photographer. I don’t discover what the final product looks like until I return from the field to digitally manipulate the images. It reminds me of my early days working with film when I didn’t get to see what I shot until the film was developed. Except today I’m using specialized equipment and software.
I am drawn to 360 photography’s incredible possibilities and the constant experimentation it demands. What you’re seeing in a finished panorama, twisted into a circle, is actually multiple photos stitched together from upward, downward and 360° horizontal perspectives. My work is an alchemy of finding the exact right location, refining my vision, and the intricacies of incorporating as many as 50 images. I am forever exploring new angles, heights and distances that shape my personal interpretation of a subject. I enjoy combining traditional filmmaking techniques with emerging technology to create art that balances the abstract with reality.
I like to learn about how viewers react to my work and hear about what the audience might like to see in the future. Perhaps a 360 image I produce builds on a memory they have about a place that is special to them. Whether it’s an ancient forest, a weathered lighthouse, or a landmark such as Grand Central Station, my goal is to make art that tells a story, evokes emotion, and connects individuals in an experiential way.
